More than $215,000 in Firefighting Equipment Bound for Placentia Bay and the Burin Peninsula
The Provincial Government is providing over $180,000 for firefighting equipment throughout Placentia Bay and the Burin Peninsula region to help further modernize the municipal fire service. Combined with the investment of the towns and communities, more than $215,000 in new equipment will be placed in fire halls throughout the region.
“I have had the privilege of visiting numerous fire departments and meeting many of the firefighters who help keep our residents safe and secure,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services. “Our government continues to make significant progress in addressing the firefighting equipment needs throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, in partnership with the communities served by these brave men and women.
Funding is provided through the Provincial Firefighting Equipment Financial Assistance Program administered by Fire and Emergency Services – Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL). Fire departments successful in receiving funding have applied for the program with the support of their municipal council and have committed to cover their portion of the equipment through the previously established cost share ratios.
Twelve fire departments will acquire new firefighting equipment as follows:

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador maintains a $1 million allocation to fund equipment needs to assist communities, as part of an unprecedented investment in the municipal fire service. Additionally, $3.9 million has been allocated for new firefighting vehicles and a new Provincial Volunteer Firefighter Tax Credit has been introduced to acknowledge the commitment of the men and women in the volunteer fire service. In total, the Provincial Government has allocated more than $6 million this year towards the municipal fire service.
