Funding Announced for Burin Peninsula Municipal Infrastructure Projects
Through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program communities on the Burin Peninsula will receive approximately $3.7 million in funding for municipal infrastructure projects.
“The Burin Peninsula is experiencing significant growth and we are proud to support communities in the region with funding for municipal capital works projects,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Through water and wastewater improvements and road infrastructure upgrading, these projects will provide great benefits to the affected communities.”
The Town of Marystown will receive approximately $1.7 million for a variety of work including the completion of the industrial water supply, upgrading of the town hall and construction of a new municipal garage, as well as water and sewer and road upgrading. Slope stabilization will take place in the Paul’s Hill area of Burin to improve safety. As part of this work, also, loose and unstable rock will be removed and screening and bolting will take place to secure the remaining rock and stabilize the embankment area.
“As Marystown continues to grow the support of the Municipal Capital Works program has a significant impact the town,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Burin - Placentia West. “Completion of the industrial water supply will help the town move forward with its economic development plans and residents will also benefit from improved roads and water and wastewater services. The work which will be undertaken in Burin will help provide safe passage for drivers and both residents and visitors to the historic community will no doubt be pleased with this commitment for road upgrading.”
Lawn will receive funding for water and sewer upgrading which includes the relocation of the current Brazil’s Pond intake. Fortune will upgrade water and sewer services in three areas of the community and St. Lawrence will receive funding for phase three of a water and sewer upgrading project. Grand Bank will upgrade four roads and the parking lots of two municipal facilities.
“The Grand Bank area will receive significant support for water and wastewater projects this construction year,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and MHA for Grand Bank. “These are important projects for the residents of Lawn, Fortune and St. Lawrence. The projects for Grand Bank will improve the road infrastructure of the community as well as the local council’s infrastructure.”
Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
