Municipal Infrastructure Improvements Announced for Western Newfoundland

Communities in the districts of Humber Valley and Bay of Islands will receive approximately $1.6 million for municipal infrastructure projects through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program.

“Our municipal infrastructure investment this year is supporting numerous projects throughout the province and western Newfoundland is no exception,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Residents of Humber Valley and Bay of Islands will benefit tremendously from these projects which range from support of recreation facilities to road infrastructure upgrading.”

Road upgrading will take place in the communities of Cormack, Jackson’s Arm and Hampden, which will also receive funding to support a new playground and the construction of a slipway. The Town of Deer Lake will receive funding for water and sewer improvements.

“Residents in the Humber Valley area will see substantial municipal infrastructure projects take place this year,” said Darryl Kelly, MHA for Humber Valley. “The road upgrades in Cormack and Jackson’s Arm will greatly enhance those communities while Hampden will benefit from not only road improvements, but a new playground and slipway. We are also pleased to support the Town of Deer Lake and their efforts to offer improved water and wastewater services.”

The communities of Irishtown-Summerside and Hughes Brook will receive funding for road improvements. Water and sewer upgrades for Meadow Lane will take place in Irishtown-Summerside while paving of some gravel roads will occur in Hughes Brook.

“Funding to improve the road infrastructure of our communities is always welcomed,” said Terry Loder, MHA for Bay of Islands. “Meadow Lane water and sewer improvements have been an important project for Irishtown-Summerside and the upgrading of gravel roads to paved roads will be a drastic improvement for residents of Hughes Brook.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
