Communities in Port au Port to Receive Infrastructure Funding
Through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program, communities in the Port au Port area will receive approximately $2.2 million in Provincial Government funding for municipal infrastructure projects.
“We are continuing with our commitment to provide enhanced municipal infrastructure to municipalities in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Through funding provided this year, residents in the Port au Port area will receive improved water and wastewater services as well as a new community centre.”
The communities of Lourdes, Mainland and Stephenville will receive water and sewer enhancement projects this year. A pH system will be installed for the Lourdes water system to improve water quality and phase one of upgrades to the waterline in Mainland will begin this year. A new water and sewer main will be installed on Pleasant Avenue in Stephenville and funding has been allocated to begin preliminary design work on a new community centre for the Town of Kippens.
“These projects will certainly enhance the quality of life for those who live in the Port au Port area,” said Tony Cornect, MHA for Port au Port. “The water system upgrades for Lourdes, Mainland and Stephenville are welcomed and emphasize our government’s commitment to water and wastewater infrastructure. A new community centre for Kippens will have significant benefits for the community and I look forward to this project commencing.”
Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
