Northern Peninsula Communities Receive Support
for Municipal Infrastructure Projects

Communities on the Northern Peninsula will receive over $4 million for municipal infrastructure projects through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program.

“A tourist’s dream and amazing region to live, the Northern Peninsula is a true asset to our province,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Supporting these important projects, such as water and sewer and recreational improvements, further demonstrates our government’s commitment to this area.”

The communities of Norris Point, Port Saunders and Trout River will receive funding for water and wastewater projects while funding has been allocated to replace the roof of the Twin Towns Sports Complex in Port au Choix. The Town of Rocky Harbour has been allocated funds for road improvements and funding has been provided for the removal of vacated homes located in the designated landslide area within the community of Daniel’s Harbour. St. Anthony and Conche will also receive funding for water system improvements and Roddickton-Bide Arm and St. Lunaire-Griquet will receive funding for road improvements.

“The projects supported by the Provincial Government through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program will be extremely beneficial to the communities of the Northern Peninsula,” said Wallace Young, MHA for St. Barbe. “The water and sewer projects will have a significant impact upon the communities receiving this work, as will the road improvement projects for both residents and visitors alike. The repair work for the roof of the Twin Towns Sports Complex in Port au Choix is very important for residents of the area as this facility serves numerous neighbouring communities.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
