Municipal Infrastructure Projects Announced for Communities in the Gander Area

The towns of Gander, Appleton and Glenwood will receive approximately $3.1 million in Provincial Government funding through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works program to complete infrastructure projects.

“The Municipal Capital Works program makes a considerable difference to our communities,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “The Town of Gander will see substantial support to complete important projects which will contribute to a high standard of living for residents of this growing community. The redevelopment of Cobb’s Pond Rotary Park, rebuilding of the smokehouse for the fire department and the commencing of a new downtown development will certainly make a positive impact on the lives of area residents.”

The Town of Gander will receive support for a two-phase redevelopment of Cobb’s Pond Rotary Park, as well as funding for the first phase of planned development in the downtown area and backup power for the community centre. Road improvements will occur at Heath Crescent and Airport Boulevard and a new smokehouse will be constructed at the fire training ground. The community of Appleton will receive funding to replace a watermain and Glenwood will receive funding to upgrade roads in the community.

“The watermain work for Appleton will ensure a reliable service for the community while the road upgrades for Glenwood will provide both residents and visitors with improved road infrastructure,” said Minister O’Brien. “Along with improvements the Town of Gander has planned for the local ski and curling clubs, I look forward to these municipal infrastructure projects commencing and the benefits they will bring to the region.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
