New Firefighting Vehicles Announced for Harbour Breton and Twillingate

The communities of Harbour Breton and Twillingate will receive new firefighting vehicles this spring, as part of the Provincial Government’s unprecedented investment in the municipal fire service.

“From emergency response capacity on the ground to fire prevention and public education initiatives, volunteer firefighters provide an invaluable service to residents,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services. “The Provincial Government is committed to assisting our towns and regions purchase much needed equipment and applauds their efforts to keep their friends and neighbours safe.”

Harbour Breton will receive a new fire rescue vehicle, while Twillingate will bring a new pumper truck into service.

“Brave individuals take on the responsibility of fire protection within our communities,” said Tracey Perry, MHA for Fortune Bay - Cape La Hune. “This investment in a new fire rescue vehicle will help strengthen fire protection services in the region and ensure that our volunteers can access the resources they require.”

Public tenders for the new vehicles will be let this summer, with delivery expected in 2012. Both Harbour Breton and Twillingate will avail of the 90/10 cost-share arrangement with the Provincial Government to purchase the vehicles, based on the community’s population.

“The Twillingate Volunteer Fire Department provides an essential community service in protecting property and saving lives, for which we are all extremely grateful,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Business and MHA for the Isles of Notre Dame. “Residents are provided with a great sense of comfort in knowing these committed individuals are available should an emergency arise. This new pumper truck will certainly assist these volunteers in the important work they do.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides a historic investment in the municipal fire service. An investment of $3.9 million has been allocated for new firefighting vehicles, as well as a continued $1 million allocation to fund equipment needs to assist communities. With the addition of a new Provincial Volunteer Firefighter Tax Credit to acknowledge the commitment of the men and women in the volunteer fire service, the Provincial Government has allocated more than $6 million towards the municipal fire service this year.
