Glenwood to Receive New Firefighting Vehicle

The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, today announced the Town of Glenwood will receive a new pumper truck.

“Building fire protection and emergency response capacity on the ground is integral for the safety and security of residents throughout the province,” said Minister O’Brien. “Through investing in firefighting vehicles, personal protective equipment, and training efforts, the Provincial Government demonstrates its focus on assisting our towns and communities to be as prepared as possible for whatever emergency may arise.”

Public tenders for new firefighting vehicles will be let this summer, with delivery expected in the spring of 2012. Glenwood will take advantage of a 90/10 cost-share arrangement to purchase the vehicle, based on the community’s population.

“The volunteers with the Glenwood Volunteer Fire Department are a courageous group of individuals, dedicated to the protection of their neighbours and friends,” noted Minister O’Brien. “Like their counterparts throughout the province, they share our government’s commitment to public safety. This new pumper truck will help to improve firefighting capabilities in the region and I’m pleased to continue the tremendous working relationship established between our government and communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides a historic investment in the municipal fire service. An investment of $3.9 million has been allocated for new firefighting vehicles, as well as a continued $1 million allocation to fund equipment needs to assist communities. With the addition of a new Provincial Volunteer Firefighter Tax Credit to acknowledge the commitment of the men and women in the volunteer fire service, the Provincial Government has allocated more than $6 million towards the municipal fire service this year.
