Substantial Road and Water Upgrades for Clarenville

The Town of Clarenville will receive $2.3 million towards important infrastructure improvements through the 2011 Municipal Capital Works Program. These projects will provide for upgrades to the area’s water system as well as roadwork that will enhance access to the elementary school.

“I am delighted that we are able to help the Town of Clarenville improve vehicle access to its elementary school and surrounding area by upgrading existing roads and providing a new one,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Water and wastewater projects are a priority for the Provincial Government and I am also pleased funding will be provided to support the water project on Bayview Drive.”

The Department of Municipal Affairs will cost share with the municipality construction of a new two-lane road from Glenview Estates to ongoing property development in the area and will also upgrade Huntley Drive and Gregory Place. These renovations should provide improved access to Balbo Elementary, particularly for large passenger vehicles. The waterline along Bayview Drive will also be upgraded to provide improved water services to that area. When contributions from the municipality are included at the provincial/municipal cost-share ratio of 80/20, the projects are expected to total approximately $3 million.

“These municipal infrastructure projects will improve the lives of residents of Clarenville by providing enhanced infrastructure to growing areas of the town,” said the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Environment and Conservation and MHA for Trinity North. “By constructing a new road from Glenview Estates and upgrading Huntley Drive and Gregory Place, we are ensuring that safe passage is provided to all students, staff and visitors of Balbo Elementary. This road will also ensure another safe access and exit for the residents of Clarenville in the Shoal Harbour River area. The waterline replacement for Bayview Drive is another important project which I know is welcomed by residents of the area.”

“As the Town of Clarenville grows, so do our infrastructure needs,” said Fred Best, Mayor of Clarenville. “These projects have been a priority for our council, as well as residents of the community, and we are pleased to partner with the Provincial Government to make them a reality.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
