Extensive Municipal Infrastructure Improvements Coming to Communities

Throughout the province this year there will be over 125 new municipal infrastructure projects as a result of an $84.3 million investment in Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador. These projects will enhance the quality of life in municipalities as the Provincial Government continues its commitment to improve municipal infrastructure.

“Our investment in municipal infrastructure recognizes the important role municipalities play within our province and demonstrates our government’s support of them,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Municipal infrastructure such as drinking water sources, community centres, and fire halls are critical components of a vibrant community and we are pleased to partner with municipalities to make improvements to these facilities.”

Emphasis will be placed on water distribution and treatment again this year, while other projects include sewage disposal, local roads and municipal buildings. Further information on specific projects will be announced in the coming weeks.

Minister O’Brien noted that in recent months he has met with a significant number of mayors and councillors about issues in their communities, including infrastructure, and appreciates their dedication to improving their areas. “Our municipalities are critically important to the social and economic well-being of our province and we will continue to work with municipal leaders to help them address the future infrastructure plans of their communities,” said Minister O’Brien.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million. Also included in this year’s budget was an increase of $4.6 million in Municipal Operating Grants bringing the total allocation to $22.4 million.
