Provincial Government Invests to Improve Water System for Badger Residents

The Provincial Government has invested approximately $1.5 million to enhance the water service and supply for the Town of Badger. The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs, provided details on the project today in Badger and was joined by the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and MHA for Grand Falls - Buchans, and Badger Mayor Michael Patey.

“Quality drinking water for our residents is a priority issue for our government and our investment for the Town of Badger clearly demonstrates this,” said Minister O’Brien. “By adding additional wells to the Badger system, not only are we improving the quality of water, but we are ensuring a consistent supply volume for the community.”

Engineering work determined the need to provide an additional two wells which will ensure redundancy and supply volume for the community. In addition, the Provincial Government cost-shared the purchase of 88 acres of land to establish a well field protection zone at a total cost of $510,000. The Early Design Initiative to study the project along with the drilling phase will cost approximately $1 million for a project total of $1.5 million.

“Our government has made a significant investment to ensure residents of Badger have a high quality and reliable water supply,” said Minister Sullivan. “I have been pleased to work with both the Department of Municipal Affairs and the Town of Badger to complete this important project and I look forward to the benefit it brings to the community.”

“The work undertaken on the water supply in Badger will have a long-term benefit for the community and ensure residents continue to have high-quality water,” said Mayor Patey. “The commitment of the Provincial Government has been critical to this project moving forward and I thank both ministers for their involvement and making this project a reality.”

Along with the drilling of new wells and the establishment of the well field protection zone, the Department of Municipal Affairs is providing $20,000 through the 2011-12 Municipal Capital Works Program to conduct a structural assessment of the water tank in Badger. Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador included $140.8 million for new and ongoing municipal infrastructure projects. When combined with federal cost-shared programs and municipal contributions, the total investment this year is expected to be approximately $219 million.
