Rencontre East and Hodge’s Cove Receive Fire Equipment Funding

Enhanced fire protection in two communities will be the focus of more than $15,600 in Provincial Government funding. The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, announced funding today for Hodge’s Cove and Rencontre East Fire Departments.

“Fire departments provide a great public service in ensuring the safety of residents in their communities,” said Minister O’Brien. “I am certainly pleased to announce this funding to help protect these individuals in all they do. As firefighters continue to guard the safety of residents throughout our many communities, the Provincial Government, in partnership with municipalities, is committed to the continued modernization of the fire service.”

The Hodge’s Cove Fire Department will receive approximately $10,500 to acquire self-contained breathing apparatus.

“Enhancements to our firefighting capacity are enhancements to our communities overall,” said the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Environment and Conservation and MHA for Trinity North. “This funding will allow for valuable equipment that will not only increase firefighting capacity, but also contribute to the safety of our firefighters.”

The fire department in Rencontre East will benefit from approximately $5,180 to purchase a high pressure breathing-air compressor.

"Our firefighters are very dedicated, courageous people, and we value their commitment to protecting our communities,” said Tracey Perry, MHA for Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune. “This funding will certainly help the firefighters, and I am delighted to support the Rencontre East Fire Department.”

Budget 2010: The Right Investments – For Our Children and Our Future doubled the investment in firefighting equipment from $500,000 to $1 million, while also increasing expenditures on firefighting vehicles to a total of $2.5 million. Funding for each fire department will be shared between the Provincial Government and the respective communities under the 90/10 cost-shared ratio established through the Municipal Capital Works Program, for a total project cost of more than $18,200.
