More than $66,000 in Funding for
Fire Protection Equipment on the Burin Peninsula

The Provincial Government is providing over $66,000 in funding for three fire departments on the Burin Peninsula. The Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, today announced funding for the Lamaline, Lord’s Cove, and Marystown fire departments. The funding is administered through Fire and Emergency Services – Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Our government is pleased to provide funding to help modernize local fire services in the province,” said Minister O’Brien. “Assisting these departments is one of the many ways we are helping the fire service protect both themselves and residents in emergency situations.”

The funding will provide for personal protective equipment, as outlined below:

Department Equipment Provincial Share Project Total
Lamaline Bunker Clothing, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) $15,780 $18,350
Lord’s Cove SCBA $8,930 $10,380
Marystown SCBA, air cylinders, face pieces $42,160 $55,140

“I am delighted with our government’s continued commitment to volunteer firefighters, to ensure they have the necessary equipment to respond in emergency situations,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and MHA for Grand Bank. “I recognize the valuable contribution of community volunteer fire departments. We are thankful for their continued dedication in providing safe and secure communities.”

"Fire protection is key to ensuring the safety of our residents,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Burin - Placentia West. “This new equipment will provide greater protection for the people and at the same time allow the firefighters to carry out their jobs more effectively and safely."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments – For Our Children and Our Future doubled the investment in firefighting equipment from $500,000 to $1 million, while also increasing expenditures on firefighting vehicles to a total of $2.5 million. Funding for these departments will be shared between the Provincial Government and the respective communities under the cost-shared ratio established through the Municipal Capital Works Program.
