Emergency Management Training Schedule Released

In a continuing effort to encourage increased emergency preparedness in the province, Fire and Emergency Services – Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) has released a schedule for expanded training efforts in emergency management. Municipalities and emergency response agencies will begin receiving information packages in the mail this week outlining the courses to be offered regionally.

“We’ve certainly seen our fair share of emergency situations in Newfoundland and Labrador in recent years,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services. “I encourage our councils, volunteers, and emergency responders to participate in these courses, offered free of charge, as it will be of great benefit in a future emergency.”

As municipalities and local service districts strive to create and update emergency management plans ahead of the May, 2012 deadline outlined in the Emergency Services Act, FES-NL staff will administer these additional courses. Participants can receive training in best practise and effective techniques of Basic Emergency Management, Emergency Operation Center Management, and/or Incident Command System 100. Also offered is an Emergency Planning Workshop based on the 12 Step Guide to Emergency Management, which was distributed by FES-NL in 2010 and remains available on the agency’s website //www.gov.nl.ca/fes

The information package being delivered this week outlines course offerings outside the Fire and Emergency Services Training Schools, which occur twice annually and rotate through the province’s major centers.

“It’s difficult to be prepared for every emergency,” added Minister O’Brien. “However, training and planning go a long way in helping to manage the situation and ensure the continued safety of our residents and communities. We all have a role to play in being ready and I know through the emergency management teams across the province we can make sure we are in the best position possible to face adversity.”
