Following 33 years of dedicated service, Assistant Commissioner Bill Smith, Commanding Officer of the RCMP in Newfoundland and Labrador, announced recently that he will retire from the RCMP in early 2012.

“Assistant Commissioner Smith has been a valued member and leader of the RCMP in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said the Honourable Felix Collins, Minister of Justice and Attorney General. “Many areas of this province have benefited from Assistant Commissioner Smith’s expertise and dedication throughout the years. His love of this province is evident. I wish him all the best during his much-deserved retirement and in his next endeavours.”

Assistant Commissioner Smith is originally from Sydney, Nova Scotia, but began his RCMP career in Grand Falls-Windsor. He has served in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Nain. In addition to 15 years of service in Newfoundland and Labrador, he has also served in Nova Scotia, RCMP Headquarters in Ottawa as well as Ottawa Division, the RCMP Training Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan, and in senior positions in Alberta and New Brunswick.

Assistant Commissioner Smith has accepted a position as Executive Director of Correctional Services with the Nova Scotia Department of Justice starting in February.
