Further Improvements Being Made to Ventilation System at HMP

Work has continued on Her Majesty’s Penitentiary (HMP) in St. John’s to upgrade the facility’s ventilation system. The Provincial Government will invest approximately $500,000 for phases two and three.

“After the completion of phase one, there was a marked improvement to the ventilation at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary,” said the Honourable Felix Collins, Minister of Justice and Attorney General. “Both inmates and staff reported that conditions at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary were more comfortable with less humidity and lower temperatures. Phases two and three will further improve the air quality throughout the facility.”

The contract, awarded to Eastern Contracting of Mount Pearl, involves upgrades to the existing ventilation system in the east block, as well as new windows for the offices in the living units.

There are four phases to upgrade the ventilation system throughout HMP. Work on phases two and three are expected to be completed by January 31, 2012. Phase one was completed in spring 2011.

Since 2009, the Provincial Government has allocated approximately $7 million for the revitalization of the Newfoundland and Labrador corrections system.
