Public Advisory: Polar Bear Warning Issued for Labrador

The Department of Justice is warning Labrador residents of a polar bear sighting near the community of Cartwright in the area known as Cape North.

Fish and Wildlife enforcement officers are monitoring the movement of the bear. Residents are reminded not to approach a polar bear. Anyone who encounters a polar bear should:

• Remain calm;
• Give the bear(s) space;
• Back away, get out of the situation, never run;
• If you must speak, do so calmly and firmly; and,
• Avoid direct eye contact with the bear(s).

Anyone sighting a polar bear in this area is asked to contact the Labrador office of the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division at 709-282-3433.
