Renovations Begin on Wabush Court

Work is now underway to complete several enhancements to the court facilities in Wabush, including the addition of holding cells to further increase security at the court. The Provincial Government is investing $95,000 for renovations to the facility.

“This funding announcement once again illustrates the Provincial Government’s commitment to our courthouses and court facilities throughout the province,” said the Honourable Felix Collins, Minister of Justice and Attorney General. “It is incumbent upon the Department of Justice to ensure that the security issues identified at any of our courts are addressed. Once these renovations are complete we will have increased safety and security for not only our court staff, but for the general public and those accessing our justice system.”

The contract, awarded to Bluebird Investments Inc., includes changes to the courtroom, prisoner’s docket, witness stand and emergency exits. The renovations will also include the construction of two holding cells for incarcerated individuals awaiting trial. The renovations are expected to enhance the operations of the court and increase the security of prisoners, staff and the general public.

“The court in Wabush not only deals with Provincial Court matters on a daily basis, but serves as a circuit court for Supreme Court matters,” said Minister Collins. “We will be working with court staff and will do our best to lessen the impact of renovations on court proceedings, while at the same time ensuring those who need access to the justice system in Wabush are accommodated during the construction.”

“I am very pleased with this announcement to increase the security and operation of the Wabush Court,” said Labrador West MHA Jim Baker. “This investment is the latest in a number of previous major investments by our government to further enhance the full-time court system for the residents of Labrador West.”

Work has already started on the installation of holding cells, with the rest of the construction work expected to begin next week and to be completed in March 2011.
