Expanded Old Perlican Marina Targets Recreational Boaters
The Lower Trinity South Regional Development Association is using a $24,681 investment from the Provincial Government to accommodate an increasing number of recreational boaters who are making Old Perlican a port of call in their travels.
“Old Perlican is one of several communities that have identified improvements in recreational marina infrastructure as a key plank of their business development activities,” said the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development. “Enhanced infrastructure has attracted recreational boaters and is creating opportunities for businesses operating in the service and accommodations sectors. Continued improvements address capacity issues and will help the area’s business community maximize the potential of the marina.”
In 2009, the Provincial Government contributed $55,658 towards the installation of 80 feet of breastwork and construction of five floating docks with electrical service. With the current investment, three floating docks and 162 feet of docking space will be added to the marina.
“Our government is committed to improving the infrastructure throughout Trinity - Bay de Verde,” said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services and MHA for Trinity - Bay de Verde. “This funding will be very beneficial to those who currently operate out of the marina for recreational purposes, but also will bring opportunities for expansion especially for the tourism sector within our area. The marina will now be able to meet the needs of a growing industry.”
The Lower Trinity South Regional Development Association is undertaking the expansion in collaboration with the Old Perlican Harbour Authority. The development association, which has a membership of approximately 150 individuals, is focused on strengthening the economic and social environment of the region spanning Heart’s Content to Lead Cove.
“Old Perlican is experiencing heavy volumes of marine traffic,” said Ted Hefford, Chair, Lower Trinity South Regional Development Association. “This support from the Provincial Government will enable us to address our capacity issues and further develop the area’s tourism industry.”
This initiative was funded through the Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund, which through Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador has $5 million available for investment. Administered by the Department of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, the program provides non-repayable contributions to economic development agencies for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.
