Norman’s Cove Wholesale Food Company Expands Product Line
Norman’s Cove-based Smith Snacks will utilize a $49,884 investment from the Provincial Government to provide training for its staff as it introduces several new products to its product line.
“By investing in the skill development of its workforce, the company is investing in its future,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. “In order to capitalize on emerging opportunities, it is imperative for any company, especially small businesses, to make the necessary investments, whether it’s equipment upgrades or through training. Smith Snacks is aligning itself to introduce these new products in an efficient manner, which in turn will lead to improved productivity and competitiveness.”
This training will be provided by Heinz Hubbert, a master baker and pastry chef, who has operated his own bakery for over 20 years. The training will focus on the preparation and production of an additional line of new products such as strudels, cinnamon rolls and a range of breads and sandwiches.
“This funding is another commitment of our government’s contribution towards skills development,” said Calvin Peach, MHA for Bellevue. “The funding will assist Smith Snacks become more competitive in the market and allow them to continue to produce quality products.”
Smith Snacks, a family-owned and operated business located in Norman’s Cove, has been in business for over 40 years. Employing 49 people, the company produces 25 varieties of sandwiches and subs, a line of sweets and an assortment of sliced packaged meats which are distributed and sold throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
“This training will give us the ability to produce products that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians would normally have to purchase frozen from the United States or other parts of Canada,” said Jason Smith, General Manager, Smith Snacks. “The products that we will produce will be fresh baked, without the preservatives found in comparable products. These will be available throughout Newfoundland and Labrador with the goal of supplying the Maritime Provinces in the near future.”
Smith Snacks has a history of undertaking training that has enabled it to reduce excess and waste while becoming a leaner, more efficient operation. Through lean manufacturing training, delivered by the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association in partnership with the Provincial Government, companies such as Smith Snacks are able to address issues that have the potential to limit a company’s effectiveness.
“This company is a strong believer in lean manufacturing and has invested in technical upgrades to deliver its current and new product line using best practices,” said Minister Sullivan. “This trend is continuing to gain popularity as many local businesses and employees are buying into the concept. The combination of investing in its employees, though skills development and subscribing to the model of lean manufacturing will enhance the future of Smith Snacks.”
This initiative was funded through the Workplace Skills Enhancement Program. Administered by the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, the program helps small and medium-sized enterprises in strategic sectors acquire and increase the skills of employees to enhance productivity and global competitiveness. It is funded by the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Agreement and the Strategic Training and Transition Fund.
