Greater Accumulation of Snow Creates
Greater Opportunities for Clarenville Businesses

Ski White Hills, with support from the Provincial Government, is enhancing its ability to make snow and extend the facility’s operating season. Already a prominent winter destination and contributor to the area’s economy, the new snow making capabilities will present greater indirect and direct opportunities for local businesses.

The Provincial Government investment of $343,889 was announced today at the base of Ski White Hills by the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. Minister Sullivan was joined by the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Environment and Conservation and MHA for Trinity North, as well as members of the Alpine Development Alliance.

“For more than 20 years, local businesses have benefited from activity at Ski White Hills,” said Minister Sullivan. ““Having an ample supply of snow and reducing the need for natural weather is essential for any winter facility. By adding new snow making equipment, Ski White Hills will attract a greater number of skiers, extend the skiing season, and ensure maximum benefits for local businesses during the winter months.”

The new snowmaking system will include tower guns being installed along the facility’s 19 ski runs, as well as modifications being made to the existing system. Additionally, improvements to the chair lift, and its eventual replacement, are set to occur in January 2011.

“This is a positive announcement for the Alpine Development Alliance,” said Corwin Mills, Alpine Development Alliance. “We will use this support from the Provincial Government to install a much-needed snow making system. It is equipment that will benefit the White Hills Ski Facility for many years to come and improve our ability to make snow at warmer temperatures, at a much faster rate. It will also result in a much earlier opening date with full coverage.”

Managed by the Alpine Development Alliance, Ski White Hills comprises 55 acres of ski and snowboard terrain. The alliance includes such community organizations as the Discovery Regional Development Board, Town of Clarenville, along with other interested groups and individuals.

“Over the years, the Alpine Development Alliance has consistently identified opportunities to improve its service offerings and ensure the best experience possible for skiers,” said Minister Wiseman. “With these upgrades, it is ensuring the facility’s long-term viability and integral role in the region.”
This initiative was funded through the Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund, which through Budget 2010: The Right Investments – For Our Children and Our Future was increased to an $11 million program. Administered by the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, the program provides non-repayable contributions to economic development agencies for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.
