Locally-Baked Goods Reaching Store Shelves Across Canada
The Provincial Government has invested $170,000 in Chatman’s Bakery to help the company add new staff to carry out various functions in the production, quality control, and packaging divisions. With a bolstered workforce, the Charlottetown-based company is better able to satisfy increased production and consumer demand.
“Moving from a local to national supplier is a great achievement in the progression of Chatman’s Bakery,” said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. “It is no small undertaking for a company to broaden its scope and secure export opportunities while managing increased production requirements and maintaining the product’s high standards. The Provincial Government is pleased to support such an ambitious company that is carving out a niche in the national marketplace.”
A contract with Loblaw’s Canada to distribute products of Chatman’s Bakery has led to increases in production activity at the company’s Charlottetown facility. New staff will receive training in the company’s operating procedures and the company is developing new labeling and packaging materials that meet industry regulations. The company currently employs more than 25 people.
“The food and beverage sector is extremely competitive,” said Minister Sullivan. “The success of Chatman’s Bakery speaks to the value of participating in industry trade shows and exhibitions to develop important relationships with key decision makers. As a government, we are working with local companies such as Chatman’s Bakery to introduce their products to a broader audience and help to grow their operations.”
A family-owned and operated business since 1979, Chatman’s Bakery manufactures a variety of baked goods such as cookies, squares, pies, and breads. Over the years, it has marketed its line of baked goods at food and beverage trade shows and exhibitions that link food producers with buyers, agents, distributors, and restaurant owners.
"Chatman's Bakery is a significant employer in the area, particularly in Charlottetown,” said Sandy Collins, MHA, Terra Nova. "With this investment they will continue to grow an already successful business. I'm pleased that the Provincial Government recognizes the growth potential and opportunity that exists and is willing to support this operation's expansion. This is another example of how industry can work and thrive in rural regions of the province."
Provincial Government funding in Chatman’s Bakery is made possible under the Workplace Skills Enhancement Program and Business Market and Development Program.
