International Day of Persons with Disabilities Recognized in Newfoundland and Labrador

On December 3, the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities will be celebrated. Today, the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities, joined representatives from the community of persons with disabilities to sign a proclamation recognizing this day in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“The United Nations designated December 3 as a day to recognize and celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of persons with disabilities around the world,” said Minister Burke. “Proclaiming this day in our province allows us to acknowledge its meaning at the local level, highlight the contributions of individuals with disabilities in our own communities and recognize the importance and benefits of a fully inclusive society for all people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Joanne MacDonald, Chairperson of the Provincial Advisory Council for the Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, joined Minister Burke for the proclamation signing.

“The signing of the proclamation to recognize the International Day of Persons with Disabilities within our province signifies the importance of full inclusion and equal access for all,” said Ms. MacDonald. “The path ahead will not be without its challenges, however with continued teamwork and dedication we will move closer to our goal of a fully inclusive Newfoundland and Labrador.”

The theme of the 2011 International Day of Persons with Disabilities, “Together for a better world for all: Including persons with disabilities in development,” aims to include disability issues in all development to ensure full and effective participation and equality of persons with disabilities in all aspects of life.

“As Minister Responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities, I am pleased with the achievements our government has made towards enhancing inclusion in our province,” said Minister Burke. “Through teamwork and collaboration with the advisory council and the community of persons with disabilities, our government is paving the way forward to an inclusive society in Newfoundland and Labrador, a society free of barriers where all individuals can participate fully in all aspects of life.”
