Policy on Multiculturalism Continues to Promote
Diversity and Strengthen the Province’s Economy

Members from multiculturalism organizations, community groups and residents with various cultural backgrounds joined Provincial Government representatives today (Tuesday, September 13) at a ceremony to celebrate how diversity and multiculturalism are strengthening the province’s economy.

“Newfoundland and Labrador is blessed with lucrative resources and industries but our most valuable assets are our dynamic people and culture,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism. “It is inspirational to see that the province is now home to people from 100 different countries, 70 different languages, with almost 50 per cent of immigrants located in communities outside St. John's. Our strategy is attracting highly skilled individuals who help businesses and employers address labour market needs, and I assure residents of all cultures that the Provincial Government deeply values your opinions, traditions and contributions as we realize a common goal of a prosperous future.”

Through the Policy on Multiculturalism, implemented in 2008, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador works with various community partners to foster inclusive citizenship, encourage Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to welcome immigrants into their communities, and celebrate the valuable contributions that all cultures make to the province.

“I am extremely proud of our Policy on Multiculturalism, as it promotes respect, quality, collaboration and inclusive citizenship for all people living in this province,” said Minister King. “Over the past three years, immigrants have been strengthening our communities and creating the kind of diversity that leads to creativity, innovation and economic growth. This is truly a milestone worth celebrating.”

Since the introduction of the Provincial Immigration Strategy, Diversity ~ Opportunity and Growth, launched in 2007, the Provincial Government has invested in excess of $2 million annually to support initiatives aimed at increasing the number of immigrants. This investment also supports multicultural activities that ensure successful settlement and community integration for those who have chosen to become Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
