Ten Job Creation Partnerships Approved for the Isles of Notre Dame
Through an investment of $186,497, the Provincial Government will support 10 Job Creation Partnership projects, employing 31 individuals in the Isles of Notre Dame.
“Today’s announcement ensures that project sponsors have the necessary financial resources to hire individuals to undertake key priorities in their communities,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. “The funding will help 31 individuals gain employment experience and communities will see long-term positive impacts as a result of their work.”
The projects include the hiring of individuals to help support and operate various tourism-related initiatives in the region, such as museum interpreters and tour guides. Details of each project are outlined in the backgrounder below.
“These projects contribute to the economy of these communities and help support the promotion of the area’s heritage,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “They bolster the work force in the area and also continue to protect the unique culture and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Job Creation Partnership program funding is provided through direct contributions to sponsors or through the extension of Employment Insurance benefits for project participants and may include in-kind or in-cash contributions from sponsors. Examples of potential partnership initiatives include maintenance and repairs to community infrastructure, such as town halls and churches, the beautification of public areas, and funding to support local events.
“I am pleased that funding will be provided to support these initiatives,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Business and MHA for the Isles of Norte Dame. “The 31 participants will receive valuable training and will contribute to infrastructure renovations, heritage preservation, and planning for other possible endeavors in the area.”
In November 2009, responsibility for Labour Market Development Agreement programs and services, including the Job Creation Partnership program, transferred from the Federal Government to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Since that time, the Provincial Government has delivered approximately 475 projects with a total value of nearly $22 million, providing employment for over 2,250 individuals.
