Corner Brook Area Receives Job Creation Partnership Funding

With a Provincial Government contribution of $385,785 through the Job Creation Partnership program, 16 individuals will gain valuable work experience through four Job Creation Partnerships project in the District of Humber West.

The funding will enable 12 individuals to be employed with the Humber Community YMCA in Corner Brook as team leaders and site coordinators to work in partnership with the Western School District; one person will assist the Canadian Cancer Society in Corner Brook as a community development assistant to help plan prevention programs, as well as provide practical supports, educational material and information sessions; two individuals will be employed with Sonrise Ministries in Corner Brook to coordinate youth activities and instructional programming; and one person will work with the Canadian Association of Student Activity Advisors in Corner Brook as a project coordinator to assist in the preparation of the 2011 Canadian Student Leadership Conference taking place at Corner Brook Regional High.

“Today’s announcement will ensure that each of the project sponsors has the necessary financial resources to hire individuals to undertake priorities in the Corner Brook area,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. “By partnering with the Provincial Government, each organization has the means to accomplish their goals, while producing meaningful employment opportunities for 16 local individuals.”

Job Creation Partnership program funding is provided through direct contributions to sponsors or through the extension of Employment Insurance benefits for project participants and may include in-kind or in-cash contributions from sponsors. Examples of potential partnership initiatives include maintenance and repairs to community infrastructure, such as town halls and churches, the beautification of public areas, and funding to support local events.

“I am pleased by the announcement today of $385,785 in support of four very important organizations in the Corner Brook region,” said Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West. “Many important projects and initiatives have been delivered through the Job Creation Partnership program and I sincerely look forward to their benefits being felt for months and years to come.”

In November 2009, responsibility for Labour Market Development Agreement programs and services, including the Job Creation Partnership program, transferred from the Federal Government to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Since that time, the Provincial Government has delivered approximately 475 projects with a total value of nearly $22 million, providing employment for over 2,250 individuals.
