Fortune Seniors’ Cottages to Receive Window Retrofits

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is continuing to improve its existing affordable social housing portfolio through a $40,000 Provincial Government investment to replace windows for eight seniors’ cottages in Fortune this summer.

“We recognize that quality of life is affected by one’s surroundings and this work is in keeping with our long-term priorities to preserve our affordable social housing units while improving the energy efficiency of these properties,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “I hope that such upgrades and renovations, such as we’ve made on more 3,200 units throughout the province over the past two years, create a greater community awareness of the value of public housing in our province.”

Tenders will be called soon and the anticipated completion date for the work is early fall.

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released in August 2009, outlines a long-term vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping to create healthier communities. Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,573 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador also allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure in 2011, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.
