Job Creation Partnership Program Making an Impact on Burin Peninsula

Since April, 25 individuals have been hired through a Job Creation Partnership investment of $197,301 on the Burin Peninsula. These individuals are gaining valuable work experience and utilizing their new skills to support projects being undertaken by Fortune Head ECO Friends Incorporated; Grand Bank Heritage Association Incorporated; Lions Club of Garnish; and, Winterland Heritage Development Committee. Details of each project are outlined in the backgrounder below.

“The Provincial Government is proud to partner with municipalities and organizations to undertake projects of local and regional significance,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. “The projects highlighted today are providing 25 individuals with valuable employment opportunities and allowing organizations from throughout the region to undertake projects of great importance to their respective communities.”

Job Creation Partnership program funding is provided through direct contributions to sponsors or through the extension of Employment Insurance benefits for project participants and may include in-kind or in-cash contributions from sponsors. Examples of potential partnership initiatives include maintenance and repairs to community infrastructure such as town halls and churches, the beautification of public areas, and funding to support local events.

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation is pleased with this investment to preserve and promote culture, heritage and recreation.

“These projects support the goals of our department in tourism, culture, recreation and heritage, whether it is to employ people to operate an interpretation center or to provide maintenance for the local museum,” said Minister French. “We look forward to the success of all these projects, as we anticipate visitors from both inside and outside the province.”

In November 2009, responsibility for Labour Market Development Agreement programs and services, including the Job Creation Partnership program, transferred from the Federal Government to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Since that time, the Provincial Government has delivered approximately 475 projects with a total value of nearly $22 million, providing employment for over 2,250 individuals.
