Team Newfoundland and Labrador
Wins Big at Skills Canada National Competition

Following one of their best performances ever, the 41 members of Skills Canada - Team Newfoundland and Labrador have returned home with a bevy of medals earned at the 17th annual Skills Canada National Competition, held June 1-4 in Quebec City.

“Team Newfoundland and Labrador won 14 medals in 13 competitions, which was the best performance in Atlantic Canada and among the top medal counts in the country,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. “The Provincial Government is extremely proud of our young Skills Canada competitors and the success they continue to achieve. Our competitors are great ambassadors for our province. They showcase the skills and aptitudes that are in great demand around the world, while simultaneously exploring potential careers that may lead to long-term sustainable employment. This is indeed a great accomplishment.”

Team Newfoundland and Labrador took home five gold medals, three silver and six bronze in the competition. Michael Rowe, a student at College of the North Atlantic (CNA), also won the Best of Region award for his effort in the car painting competition.

A complete list of medal winners is provided in the backgrounder below.

“Team Newfoundland and Labrador’s success is indicative of how the Provincial Government's focus on skilled trades at the high school and post-secondary levels is enabling our young people to compete successfully at the national level,” said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education. “It also bodes well for the further development of a skilled workforce in this province that is prepared to meet industry needs in the 21st century. I take this opportunity to congratulate all the participants, as well as the various teachers, instructors and employers who provided the guidance and support which made this outcome possible.”

The Provincial Government supported Skills Canada - Newfoundland and Labrador and the Skills Canada National Competition this year through a $95,000 investment provided through the Departments of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Education.

This year’s national competition saw more than 500 high school, post-secondary and apprenticeship students from every province and territory compete in more than 40 competitions. The annual event is organized by Skills Canada to profile technology and trade careers.
