Social Housing Portfolio Improvements Continue in Central Region
Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is continuing to improve its existing affordable social housing portfolio through a Provincial Government investment of more than $231,000 for the upgrade of four units in the central region of the province.
“These upgrades are part of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation’s ongoing annual Modernization and Improvement Program,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “We are very pleased with the significant gains we continue to make in modernizing and improving our social housing portfolio throughout the province.”
The units are located in Come By Chance, Goobies, Gambo and Twillingate. The work includes the replacement of roofing, windows, doors and siding, bathroom and electrical upgrades, and various repairs.
A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released in August 2009, outlines a long-term vision aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping to create healthier communities. Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,500 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.
Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador also allocated $25.9 million for social housing infrastructure in 2011, including $10.4 million for maintenance and $12 million for renovations and improvements.
