Upgrades Continue on Social Housing Portfolio in Avalon Region

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation continues to improve its existing affordable social housing portfolio through a Provincial Government investment of more than $601,000 for the upgrade of 100 units in the Avalon Region.

“Our ongoing investment in the existing affordable social housing portfolio will significantly extend the life of these properties to ensure they meet current and future housing needs,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “This modernization and improvement work plays a critical role in supporting the corporation’s strategic objectives which include improving the quality of its existing housing stock.”

The units to be renovated are located in St. John’s, Mount Pearl, Conception Bay South, Harbour Grace, Riverhead, Placentia, Dunville, Holyrood, Victoria, Mackinsons, Norman’s Cove, Spaniard’s Bay, Carbonear, Fox Harbour, Long Cove, Tilton, Clarke’s Beach, Butlerville and Bell Island. The work includes exterior and interior painting, replacement of roofing, windows, doors and siding, installation of new ventilation and electrical systems, plumbing, furnace replacement, as well as various minor repairs and upgrades.

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, released in August 2009, outlines a long-term vision for social housing. It is aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping to create healthier communities. Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,511 non-profit dwellings province-wide.
