The following is being distributed at the request of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation:

Construction of Affordable Housing Properties to Get Underway in Nain

Through a Provincial Government investment of $945,000, construction of four new affordable housing properties in Nain will soon get underway. Budgell’s Equipment and Rentals in Triton has been awarded a project contract, and work is anticipated to begin this summer.

“The construction of these units highlights the Provincial Government’s continued commitment to increasing affordable housing throughout the province,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. “These projects make a significant difference in people’s lives and provide them the opportunity to build a better future.”

The work will include construction of four, three-bedroom units contained in two single-storey duplexes. Accessibility is enhanced through level entries to both units in one duplex and by having all hallways, doors and bathrooms suitable for navigating when using a wheelchair or walker. The contract also provides for related excavation and landscaping of both sites.

“These four new units are a welcome addition to the community, and their construction over the coming months will be met with much anticipation and excitement by the families who will live in them,” said the Honourable Patty Pottle, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs. “The challenges of living on coastal Labrador are indeed great. However, sound investments such as today’s announcement, further the Provincial Government’s commitment to bettering the lives of the people of this province.”

A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador - Secure Foundations, was released in August 2009, and outlines a long-term vision for social housing aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low income households and helping to create healthier communities. Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is the province’s largest landlord with approximately 5,522 non-profit social housing dwellings province-wide.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador allocated $8.1 million to construct affordable housing for seniors, persons with disabilities, and persons with complex needs.
