Job Creation Partnership Funding Supports Organizations in the
Port au Port Region

Three organizations in the communities of Point au Mal, Boswarlos and Cape St. George will benefit from over $114,000 in funding from the Job Creation Partnership program.

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment, made the announcement today at the Cape St. George Francophone Community Centre, along with Tony Cornect, MHA for Port au Port. The Job Creation Partnership program provides the opportunity for community organizations and municipal governments to partner with the Provincial Government to address local priority needs.

“The Provincial Government is proud to partner with organizations like the St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery Group, Kitpu First Nation and Les Terre-Neuviens Français, that undertake projects of local and regional importance,” said Minister King. “Since the Provincial Government took control of the Job Creation Partnership program from the Federal Government in November 2009, we have been working to improve and expedite the delivery of these programs, while ensuring that they are tailored to more accurately respond to local, regional and provincial needs. The projects announced today deliver on that commitment by providing 14 individuals with employment and allowing the organizations they serve to undertake projects of great importance in their respective communities.”

St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery Group will receive $10,554, employing three individuals to complete improvements to the St. Vincent de Paul Church in Point au Mal. The Kitpu First Nation will receive $88,293, employing eight individuals to complete improvements and an extension to the Kitpu Band Community Friendship Centre in Boswarlos. Les Terre-Neuviens Français will receive $15,304, employing three individuals to complete improvements and an expansion to the Cape St. George Francophone Community Centre.

“Each project funded under the Job Creation Partnership program today is very important to this region,” said MHA Cornect. “I am pleased to join the minister in making the announcement, which will not only support our community but also support individuals who require employment and job skills to provide them with successful attachment to the labour market in the future. This is a win-win situation for everyone involved.”

In November 2009, responsibility for Labour Market Development Agreement programs and services, including the Job Creation Partnership program, transferred from the Federal Government to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Since that time, the Provincial Government has delivered approximately 475 projects with a total value of nearly $22 million, providing employment for over 2,250 individuals.

Job Creation Partnership program funding is provided through direct contributions to sponsors or through the extension of Employment Insurance benefits for project participants and may include in-kind or in-cash contributions from sponsors. Examples of potential partnership initiatives include maintenance and repairs to community infrastructure, such as town halls and churches, the beautification of public areas, and funding to support local events.
