Minister Participates in Major Homelessness Fundraiser
The Provincial Government through Newfoundland Labrador Housing has donated $4,000 in support of the Raising the Roof campaign. The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, participated at one of the campaign’s most notable events, the 7th annual CBC and Newfoundland and Labrador Housing and Homelessness Network (NLHHN) Pancake Breakfast, at the Battery Hotel in St. John’s today.
“Newfoundland Labrador Housing has supported this annual campaign since 1997 and we are proud to make a contribution once again this year,” said Minister King. “Alleviating and preventing homelessness in our province and striving to provide affordable homes for those most in need is and will continue to be a cornerstone in the Provincial Government’s social housing plan.”
Front-line organizations such as Choices for Youth, Stella Burry Community Services, Marguerite’s Place, and the NLHHN benefit from the fundraiser. These groups provide services to communities and engage and promote diverse partnerships that ultimately make a difference in the fight against homelessness.
“We are very thankful for this donation from Newfoundland Labrador Housing and we appreciate all the work that they do each day to help prevent homelessness by providing affordable housing options to people in greatest need,” said Kimberly Yetman-Dawson, Network Director with NLHHN. “We are also delighted to have Minister King join us this morning at the Battery Hotel, and we appreciate the executive of Newfoundland Labrador Housing for joining us at various venues across the province to help serve up our pancake breakfasts.”
Newfoundland Labrador Housing representatives volunteered at pancake breakfast events in Grand Falls-Windsor, Conception Bay South, Mount Pearl and St. John’s.
A Social Housing Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador, Secure Foundations outlines a long-term vision for social housing aimed at improving the housing circumstances of low-income households and helping to create healthier communities. In Budget 2010: The Right Investments – For Our Children and Our Future, the Provincial Government invested $27 million for housing infrastructure projects, affordable housing and increased maintenance funding.
