Community-based Organizations Encouraged to
Submit Proposals for Targeted Initiative for Older Workers

The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment is encouraging community-based organizations to submit proposals for employment projects that meet the goals and objectives of the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers (TIOW) agreement.

"TIOW projects provide an excellent opportunity for community-based agencies to help workers transition into new and rewarding careers, which in turn revitalizes regional economies throughout Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister King. "These projects mean a great deal to the communities in which they take place, and not just because they are creating innovative career development options for people in need of help. Through these projects, we are also changing the mindset about what is possible in our province. We are readying the provincial labour force for the opportunities of tomorrow."

The TIOW is a cost-shared initiative between the Provincial and Federal Governments designed to provide valuable support to unemployed workers age 55-64 who live in communities affected by significant downsizing or closures, or experiencing long-term unemployment.

In 2010-11, 140 individuals have participated in 13 TIOW projects. Participants were provided employment assistance including employment counselling, resume writing, interview techniques, as well as employer-based work experience where wage subsidies are provided to the employer, or community-based organization.

Community-based organizations must demonstrate expertise in the delivery of employment programming to qualify for TIOW funding. Proposals must meet the criteria and requirements outlined in the program guidelines that can be obtained from www.hrle.gov.nl.ca/hrle/findajob/workexperience.html#older

The deadline for proposal submission is February 15. Proposals can be submitted via e-mail to TIOW@gov.nl.ca or by calling 709-729-3118.
