Government House Leader Pleased with Productive Spring Session

Government House Leader, the Honourable Joan Burke, said today that significant accomplishments were made during this session, including some much-needed updates and amendments to various pieces of legislation. The Fourth Session of the 46th General Assembly resulted in 31 pieces of legislation and two resolutions being passed.

While the majority of this work contained amendments, some new acts were introduced that replaced out-dated legislation. A new bill, the Protection of Adults Act, will serve to enhance the protection of vulnerable adults in Newfoundland and Labrador. This replaced the Neglected Adults Welfare Act, which was 38 years old. The Practice of Medicine in the Province Act replaced the Medical Act, 2005. This piece of legislation received significant additions and enhancements, warranting the creation of a new act.

"A great deal of work has gone into updating various acts in order to reflect current standards and practices," said Minister Burke. "We had some interesting debate during this session, and I would like to recognize all of my colleagues for their valuable contribution."
