Tender Announced for New Carbonear Long-Term Care Facility

Work on a new long-term care facility in Carbonear is progressing with a tender for the next phase of the project. Over the past number of months site preparation has been underway. With this phase nearing completion, a tender for construction of the main building is being issued.

“I am pleased to see the construction of this facility progress to the next phase,” said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Services. “By moving forward with construction of this facility, the Provincial Government is responding to a need for enhanced access to long-term care services, which will allow residents to remain as close to home as possible.”

This latest tender calls for the construction of a patient residence and a support services building which will be connected by a double corridor link to Carbonear General Hospital. The residence will include food and laundry services and a cafeteria that will serve both the long-term care facility and the regional hospital. The support services building will house staff offices, materials storage, receiving docks, garbage disposal and recycling, as well as the main mechanical and electrical rooms.

The tender also includes an extension and alterations to the existing hospital boiler plant to accommodate a new emergency generator and the replacement of an existing boiler with a larger capacity unit.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador, allocated $20 million for the continued construction of the long-term care facility in Carbonear. Once completed, the long-term care facility will include 250 beds, as well as space for physiotherapy, recreational therapy, occupational therapy, and spirituality. The building is expected to be ready for occupancy in late 2014.

“Our government continues to demonstrate its commitment by investing in our province’s health care infrastructure,” said Minister Kennedy. “Over the last five years, $241.6 million has been allocated for the construction of new long-term care facilities. Significant investments have also been made in our existing long-term care facilities for renovations, repairs and capital equipment.”

Budget 2011 included a total investment of $272.2 million for health care infrastructure throughout the province, which includes $200.6 million for new and continuing construction and redevelopment projects, $50 million for new equipment and $21.6 million for repairs and renovations.
