Health Care Infrastructure Improvements Announced for Fogo Island and Change Islands

Enhancements to health care services continue to be made throughout the province with an investment of $397,100 for capital equipment, repairs and renovations for the health centres on Fogo Island and Change Islands. Details of the investment were provided today at the Fogo Island Health Centre by the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Service.

Minister Kennedy was joined by the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Business and MHA for The Isles of Notre Dame; Karen McGrath, CEO, Central Health; and, Mayor of Fogo Island, Gerard Foley.

“The Provincial Government continues to invest in health care in all regions of our province to enhance services, delivery and accessibility for all residents,” said Minister Kennedy. “The health centres on Fogo Island and Change Islands are important examples of why we must ensure our health care services reach every part of the province, especially our rural communities. The funding we are announcing today continues to build on our overall health care infrastructure that is touching all parts of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

The Fogo Island Health Centre is allocated $371,100 for equipment, repairs and renovations. This funding will be used to refit the health centre’s emergency room, and includes the purchase of a new ultrasound machine, a sit-to-stand lift, two vaccine fridges and an assisted bedside patient lift. Also included in the funding will be the replacement of the computerized synchronized digital clock system throughout the facility, and repairs to the exterior.

“Ensuring that our residents have health care services close to their communities is important to rural Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister Dalley. “These investments in the Fogo Island and Change Islands health centres will benefit the residents who use these facilities and I am pleased that our government continues to invest in rural health care.”

The Change Islands Health Centre will receive $26,000 for a video-teleconferencing system used for physician and patient assessments and consultations, and new lab equipment.

“The residents of Fogo Island and Change Islands rely on the services at these facilities,” said Ms. McGrath. “Investments in equipment for these health centres as well as repairs and renovations, ensures access to quality health care services for the people of this area.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador furthered the Provincial Government’s commitment of advancing health infrastructure throughout the province with a total investment of $272.2 million, which includes $200.6 million for new and continuing construction and redevelopment projects, $50 million for new equipment and $21.6 million for repairs and renovations.
