Twillingate Health Centre Supported Through Provincial Investments

Improvements valued at approximately $1.2 million to the Notre Dame Bay Memorial Health Centre were announced today. This investment for repairs, renovations and capital equipment is part of Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador. The Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Services, provided details of the investment, along with the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Business and MHA for The Isles of Notre Dame, Karen McGrath, CEO, Central Health, and, Gordon Noseworthy, Mayor of Twillingate.

“Providing accessible health care services to all residents of the province ensures that the needs of our communities are met, and it positions them for today and the future,” said Minister Kennedy. “The Notre Dame Bay Memorial Health Centre is a key piece of infrastructure for this area, and we will continue to enhance services for the people of Twillingate and the residents of the surrounding communities that use this facility.”

Work at the health centre includes $1 million for repairs and renovations that will see the installation of a nurse call system, upgrades to the boiler, flooring replacement and renovations to the long-term care unit.

“Improving our health care facilities is essential to providing quality care for patients and it ensures that the communities and people in The Isles of Notre Dame have the necessary services available to them,” said Minster Dalley. “I am very pleased to see that important upgrades will be made to this facility, which will continue to serve our residents for many years to come.”

An investment of $160,300 will also be used to refit the emergency room, and purchase equipment including a patient floor lift, three geriatric chairs, and vaccine fridges.

“The residents of Twillingate, New World Island and area rely on Notre Dame Bay Memorial Health Centre to provide important health care services,” said Ms. McGrath. “This investment in equipment for this facility as well as repairs and renovations, ensures access to quality health care services for the people of this area.”

In addition to the infrastructure funding announced today, $71,900 has also been allocated in Budget 2011 for a diagnostic imaging technologist position to be located at the centre. This position, which has been posted and will close August 18, will help improve access to x-ray and ultrasound services for this area.

Over the last several years the Provincial Government has invested over $4.5 million in the Notre Dame Bay Memorial Health Centre as part of its health care infrastructure investment funding. Significant investments in infrastructure across the province are continued in Budget 2011 with a total investment of $272.2 million, which includes $200.6 million for new and continuing construction and redevelopment projects, $50 million for new equipment and $21.6 million for repairs and renovations.
