Province Renews Commitment to Mental Health Issues
During Awareness Week

Mental health remains a priority for the Provincial Government, and to further that commitment, the Honourable Jerome Kennnedy, Minister of Health and Community Services, today recognized this week as National Mental Health Week. This year’s theme is Mental Health for All.

“As this year’s theme suggests, good mental health is important for all of us and we need to take the necessary steps to protect and maintain our mental health,” said Minister Kennedy. “Mental Health Week represents an opportunity to create awareness of how important it is to personally invest in our mental health to improve our overall health and well-being. Taking time for physical activity, investing in supportive relationships, managing our stress and looking for balance in all areas of our lives are ways of maintaining good mental health.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provided $8.7 million to increase awareness of mental health and addiction issues and ensure services are strengthened throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This funding includes $4.5 million to begin the replacement of the Waterford Hospital with a new, specialized mental health facility in St. John’s.

Also included in Budget 2011 is $1 million to enhance awareness and access to mental health and addictions services through the implementation of a web-based e-mental health service and enhancements to tele-mental health services.

“Our significant investments in Budget 2011 further illustrate our commitment to raising awareness of mental health issues in this province and enhancing access to appropriate programs and services,” added Minister Kennedy. “As our government continues its progress in breaking down misconceptions and stigma associated with mental illness, I encourage all residents to take time this week to learn, talk, reflect and engage with others on issues related to mental health.”

National Mental Health Week is an annual event held by the Canadian Mental Health Association to raise awareness of mental health issues and provide learning opportunities to help all Canadians achieve and maintain good mental health in their everyday lives.
