Seniors in Trinity and Clarenville Area Latest to Benefit from Grants Program

Seniors throughout the province continue to benefit from funding through the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador (AFNL) Grants Program in which the Provincial Government is investing $200,000. The Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Services and Minister Responsible for Aging and Seniors announced today that the Town of Trinity and the seniors organization Random Age-Friendly Communities in Clarenville are receiving grants to support seniors.

“The Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants program demonstrates our government’s commitment to planning for an aging population,” said Minister Kennedy. “The projects funded through this program will support seniors as they continue to lead active lives. The contributions made by seniors will enrich the lives of everyone in their communities.”

The Town of Trinity is receiving $10,000 to become a more age-friendly community. The town will engage in activities that include forming an age-friendly committee or team, evaluating community resources and assets, identifying community champions, determining challenges and opportunities, and creating an action plan.

“Community-based groups play a very valuable role in the delivery of age-friendly programs, which are important aspects of the lives of senior residents,” said the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Minister of Environment and Conservation and MHA for Trinity North. “The Provincial Government recognizes that our population is rapidly aging, and we will continue to support programs like this which enhance the lives of the people of our province.”

The Random Age-Friendly Communities group is receiving $7,500 to strengthen Clarenville’s established age-friendly network that consists of accessibility and public works inventories, a recreation program, and an inventory of financial institutions and programs available to seniors.

The Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program is one initiative of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework that was launched by the Provincial Government in 2007. Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador allocates $200,000 to the program.
