Two More Communities to Benefit from Age-Friendly Grants Program

Seniors in New-Wes-Valley and St. Alban’s are the latest to benefit from funding through the Provincial Government’s Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador (AFNL) Grants Program. The Provincial Government is investing a total of $200,000 in the grants program.

“The Provincial Government is committed to providing resources to help municipalities take the necessary steps to build age-friendly communities,” said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Services and Minister Responsible for Aging and Seniors. “People of all ages in communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador will benefit from the contributions made by seniors who remain active.”

The Town of New-Wes-Valley and the Town of St. Alban’s are each receiving $10,000 to become more age-friendly communities. The towns will engage in activities that include forming an age-friendly committee or team, evaluating community resources and assets, identifying community champions; determining challenges and opportunities, and creating an action plan.

“I am pleased, on behalf of the seniors in New-Wes-Valley, to see our government coming forward again with assistance for this very important sector of our population,” said the Honourable Harry Harding, Minister of Government Services and MHA for Bonavista North. “This is just one of many initiatives whereby the Provincial Government is providing the means to enable our seniors to avail of a better quality lifestyle.”

“Our seniors play a vital role in keeping our communities strong and vibrant and we highly respect their contributions and dedication to identifying and meeting the needs of our older population,” said Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune MHA Tracey Perry. “This funding will contribute to the well-being of our seniors and improve the programs and services available to them and ensure that everyone stays involved.”

The AFNL Grants Program is one initiative of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework that was launched by the Provincial Government in 2007.
