Seniors Continue to Benefit from Age-Friendly Grants Program
The Town of Middle Arm and the Pleasantview Manor 50+ Club in Lewisporte are the latest recipients of funding through the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador (AFNL) Grants Program, through which the Provincial Government is investing a total of $200,000.
“The Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Grants Program allows municipalities and organizations to build age-friendly communities where seniors can thrive,” says the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Services and Minister Responsible for Aging and Seniors. “Our government is committed to providing support to help create communities where seniors can continue to make valuable contributions.”
The Town of Middle Arm is receiving $10,000 to become a more age-friendly community. The town will engage in activities that include forming an age-friendly committee or team, evaluating community resources and assets, identifying community champions, determining challenges and opportunities, and creating an action plan.
“I commend the Town of Middle Arm for embracing age-friendly concepts and for their leadership,” said Kevin Pollard, MHA for Baie Verte-Springdale. “Engaging residents of all ages in social and physical activities certainly helps promote a healthy and active lifestyle. I thank our government for continuing to support this very worthwhile initiative.”
The Pleasantview Manor 50+ Club in Lewisporte is receiving $6,000 for a program in which seniors will partner with local students to connect and engage with friends and family in new ways using technology.
“I am very pleased to have seniors groups in this area benefit from Age-Friendly Grants,” said Wade Verge, MHA for Lewisporte. “I look forward to seeing the group at Pleasantville Manor successfully interact with local students to the mutual benefit of both groups.”
The AFNL Grants Program is one initiative of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework that was launched by the Provincial Government in 2007.
