Contract Awarded for New Health Centre in Flower’s Cove

The Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Services, today announced the awarding of a contract for the construction of a new health centre in the community of Flower’s Cove. The new Strait of Belle Isle Health Centre will replace the existing health centre and better accommodate the needs of patients and employees working in the current facility.

“The construction of this new facility continues to demonstrate this government’s commitment to the renewal and replacement of health care infrastructure throughout the province,” said Minister Kennedy. “Once open, the new Strait of Belle Isle Health Centre will house and provide 24-hour ambulance services, physician clinics, dental clinics, visiting specialist clinics, laboratory and diagnostic services, and valuable community health services for mental health, public health and home care needs.”

The $7.25 million contract for this project has been awarded to Marco Services Limited with construction slated to begin in the spring of 2011 and an anticipated occupancy date of December 2012. This contract calls for the construction of a single-story building and a mechanical service penthouse. External ambulance and generator buildings were included as part of this tender and will be constructed on site.

“We are very pleased to see this project move forward in the Flower’s Cove area,” said Boyd Rowe, CEO of Labrador-Grenfell Health. “Our clients and employees have been advocating for a new facility for quite some time. We thank the Provincial Government for recognizing this need and for making this investment in improved healthcare services in the Strait of Belle Isle area of the region.”

Budget 2010: The Right Investments – For Our Children and Our Future allocated $208.9 million for health infrastructure projects throughout the province. This includes $177.3 million for new facilities and equipment and $31.6 million for repairs and renovations.
