Englee Company Pleads Guilty to Occupational Health and Safety Charges

The Department of Government Services announced today that an Englee company has pled guilty to three violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. The charges arose from inspections which occurred at a boatbuilding facility in Englee between July 2008 and January 2009.

Sealand Enterprises Limited was alleged to have violated the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations requiring sufficient ventilation in the facility, the wearing of appropriate respiratory equipment, and the installation of effective washing facilities. The company was also charged with violating two stop work orders concerning working without ventilation and the use of an overhead crane without appropriate inspection.

In exchange for the guilty pleas, two charges were withdrawn. The company was fined $2,000 on each charge, for a total fine of $6,000.

The charges were the result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch. The case concluded at Provincial Court in Corner Brook on September 27, 2011.
