Voluntary and Non-Profit Sector Web Resource Launched

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians contribute to the well-being of their communities through over 35 million volunteer hours a year. It is important that these volunteers, along with employees in the voluntary and non-profit sector, have a resource which they can access to obtain information on insurance. In response to this, the Department of Government Services has launched a website which brings together key information on insurance options which may be available to help protect these individuals. In addition, the department has created a dedicated position within the Financial Services Regulations division with responsibility for insurance issues within the voluntary and non-profit sector.

“Many of the employees and volunteers in the voluntary and non-profit sector assume a broad range of responsibilities in the course of their work,” said the Honourable Harry Harding, Minister of Government Services. “It is crucial that these individuals become familiar with the risks associated with the activities they carry out.”

The website is a project of the Department of Government Services in conjunction with the Voluntary Non-Profit Insurance Committee. The committee, which comprises government, non-profit and voluntary organizations, the insurance industry and a consumer advocate, was established in 2007 to identify key issues of insurance and risk management which affect voluntary and non-profit organizations.

“This new web resource will enable volunteers and sector organizations to access the information they require to better understand insurance and the role of risk management,” said the Honourable Dave Denine, Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister Responsible for the Volunteer and Non-Profit Sector. “By having appropriate insurance coverage in place, organizations are protecting their assets, including their most important assets, their people.”

The site contains information on the various types of insurance, frequently asked questions and links to national voluntary and non-profit organizations, insurance agents, brokers, companies and research sites.

“The Community Sector Council is delighted with the launch of this website,” said Penelope Rowe, CEO of the Community Sector Council. “We have been working on improving knowledge and access to information about the issues of risk management and insurance for community organizations for several years, and this is another practical step in continuing efforts to strengthen the community sector.”

This new resource is available at www.gov.nl.ca/gs/insurance/non_profit/index.html.
