Minister Proclaims May 1-7 as NAOSH Week

The Honourable Harry Harding, Minister of Government Services, has proclaimed May 1 to May 7 as North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week in Newfoundland and Labrador. The general public is encouraged to take some time this week to focus on planning as part of our daily work, so that hazards can be eliminated or effectively controlled to create safe workplaces.

“This year’s theme Safety and Health: A Commitment for Life! What’s Your Plan? is a challenge to all stakeholders – employers, employees, unions and governments,” said the Honourable Harry Harding, Minister of Government Services. “These stakeholders must actively commit themselves to improving safety and health planning in the workplace, and to promote the creation of safe working environments.”

2011 marks the 32nd year that this event has been celebrated throughout the continent.

What started out as a local, week-long initiative of the Canadian Society of Safety Engineers in St. John’s has grown today into an event of international significance. NAOSH Week provides an annual reminder of the importance of safety and health to employers and workers alike in workplaces all across Canada, the United States and Mexico.

To launch NAOSH Week, there will be a ceremony today (Monday May 2) at 12:00 noon, in front of Confederation Building to raise the NAOSH flag. All are welcome.
