Contractor Charged with OHS Violations in Provincial Court

The Department of Government Services announced today that Kelloway Construction Limited has been charged with violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations of the department. The alleged offences occurred between April and September of 2009, and relate to activities that occurred at the former Janeway Hospital site in St. John’s.

The six charges are the result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch. In a general sense, it is alleged that the company failed as an employer to provide and maintain a safe workplace, and to ensure that the exposure of employees to airborne asbestos is reduced to the lowest practical level.

The first appearance is scheduled for March 15 at Provincial Court in St. John’s.
