2011 Financial Fitness Contest Now Open to Students

Students aged 15 to 21 years old could win an Apple iPad and possibly a $2,000 scholarship by learning about the importance of saving and investing. The Department of Government Services, as a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators, has now launched the annual Financial Fitness Challenge which runs until April 15.

“We are encouraging students and teachers to participate in this online educational contest because it provides an extra tool to teach youth about basic financial concepts,” said the Honourable Harry Harding, Minister of Government Services. “It is important for youth to learn about practising good financial habits as they are preparing to enter the workforce. Those positive habits will benefit them in the future when they will have to manage their money responsibly for their own livelihood.”

The Financial Fitness Challenge consists of mini-lessons on budgeting, saving, investing and other financial concepts. Students take quizzes to test what they have learned and the top 60 per cent are eligible for a draw in each province or territory to win an Apple iPad. The top 60 per cent nationally will be entered into a grand prize for a $2,000 scholarship.

Students can start taking the challenge by visiting www.financialfitnesschallenge.ca. Although the challenge runs through to April 15, the website’s tools and resources are accessible year-round. The Department of Government Services has sent out packages to schools in the province to encourage students to participate in the challenge.

The Canadian Securities Administrators is a voluntary umbrella organization of Canada’s provincial and territorial securities regulators whose objective is to improve, coordinate and harmonize regulation of the Canadian capital markets.
