Joint Statement by Ministers Keith Ashfield, Minister
of Fisheries and Oceans Canada,
Minister Clyde Jackman, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture for
Newfoundland and Labrador, and
Minister Peter Penashue, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador
The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture for Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Peter Penashue, Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador today commented on a decision to review the allocation of Northern Shrimp for the 2012 harvest and for future years.
“Our government is committed to ensuring the long-term economic prosperity of the northern shrimp fishery in Atlantic Canada,” said Minister Ashfield. “We are committed to working with all parties on a review of the allocation of shrimp quotas.”
“Premier Dunderdale has made communication with the Federal Government on the issues that matter to the people of our province a top priority and it is good to see the Government of Canada responding,” said Minister Jackman. “I have already had several meetings with Ministers Ashfield and Penashue and I am encouraged that the Government of Canada is committed to working with our province on these important matters.”
“As Regional Minister for Newfoundland, I am glad to be working together with the Provincial Government on such important fisheries decisions,” said Minister Penashue. “We recognize that this type of meaningful consultation and collaboration is essential in making sure that all voices are heard when important fisheries decisions are being made.”
